The role:
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the team at the National Child Inpatient Unit within the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow. Ward 4 is a 6‑bed Tier 4 CAMHS unit for children aged 5–12 years, providing specialist assessment and clinical interventions to young people experiencing a range of complex mental health difficulties.
We are looking for a motivated and compassionate individual who can demonstrate flexibility and adaptability within a dynamic and evolving service. The post involves working a 12‑hour shift pattern as part of a 24/7 rota.

Permanent, Full-time

Base location - Royal Hospital for Children, National Children’s Inpatient Unit
Key responsibilities:
- Responsible for the assessment, care planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care programmes using a strengths‑based, recovery‑focused approach that actively involves the young person.
- Undertake duties without direct supervision, working in partnership with patients, carers, and other professionals/agencies in line with legislative frameworks, agreed standards, and clinical policies.
- Work collaboratively with patients and carers using values‑based practice to deliver person‑centred care, supporting mental well‑being and preventing relapse.
- Take responsibility for the ward/department in the absence of the Senior Charge Nurse/Charge Nurse to ensure safe and effective care delivery.
- Safely administer prescribed medications and treatments, monitor effectiveness, and manage any adverse side effects.
- Maintain accurate, contemporaneous clinical records reflecting risk assessment, risk management, and evidence‑based nursing care.
- Escalate any concerns that may impact the delivery of safe, effective, person‑centred care.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- Registered Mental Health Nurse, or Registered Learning Disability Nurse
- experience of working in an inpatient setting and working with young people and their families.
- Although experience working with young people is preferable, it’s more important that you have a positive attitude, are conscientious, caring, considerate, compassionate, keen to learn, and able to work towards maintaining a high standard of nursing care to the patients we support.
- Working knowledge of mental health / mental illness/wellness and recovery
- Working knowledge of rights, values‑based practice and legislation frameworks
- Ability to work flexibly, prioritise workload and adapt to meet person‑centred care without direct supervision
- Ability to form therapeutic professional relationships and work as part of the wider team
- Working knowledge and demonstrable evidence of the NMC Code

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
