The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde is one of the largest and most successful engineering faculties in the UK, and the largest in Scotland; boasting a growing research portfolio of over £85 million. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is one of the largest and most successful civil engineering departments in Scotland. The department is ranked 1st in Scotland and 3rd in the UK in the Guardian Subject Rankings 2025. We have over 600 students, including 450 undergraduates, 100 taught postgraduates and almost 100 registered research students. We have a strong commitment to widening access and inclusion while maintaining academic quality and an outstanding student experience.

As an Engineering Technician, you will provide practical technical support and advice to a wide range of student and staff and support teaching and research activities. The post-holder will require a broad and deep understanding of a range of methods and procedures of engineering applications. You will be educated to Higher National Certificate (HNC) level in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related discipline, or with the relevant technical work experience, experience within wider civil engineering, environmental engineering, geoscience, soils, hydrology or analytical science would also be desirable.

You will have significant knowledge and expertise in an engineering workshop or laboratory environment as well as experience and demonstrable working knowledge of local health and safety regulations, risk assessment and technical standards. You will have experience of providing a high level of personal responsibility and initiative to respond different technical tasks and you will have experience of applying judgement to deal with daily challenges and circumstances.

You will be a confident communicator, have good verbal and written communication skills with the ability to inform and explain technical elements to staff and students with a varying degree of technical knowledge. You will have excellent troubleshooting skills, including a methodical approach to solving complex problems, with limited guidance. You will have an ability to work autonomously, prioritising and coordinating your own workload and making decisions with minimum supervision to meet project deadlines yes also have the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Strong interpersonal skills are essential.
