Senior Health Care Support Worker - Obstetrics and Gynaecology

The role:
As a Senior Healthcare Support Worker, you will play a key role within our Obstetrics and Gynaecology team, delivering compassionate, personcentred care to patients and supporting Registered Nurses and Midwives in providing a safe and effective clinical environment. You’ll carry out a wide range of essential care tasks from patient observations to assisting with clinical procedures, while building positive relationships with women, families and the wider multidisciplinary team. This role is ideal for someone who is caring, motivated and confident in using their skills to enhance patient experience, maintain high standards of care, and contribute to the smooth running of a busy ward. You’ll also have opportunities to continue developing your knowledge and skills through ongoing training and professional development. This post will be within Labour Suite, where the candidate will be expected to work within our busy Obstetric Theatres as a circulating assistant. There will also be an expectation that the candidate will support Midwives in birthing rooms with patient care throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal time.
No Band 2 roles are eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa or Health and Care Worker visa. routes. For Band 3 roles, only posts of 32 hours per week or more may meet eligibility. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) cannot provide a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) for roles that do not meet these criteria, and applications requiring sponsorship will not be considered.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- Queen Elizabeth University Hospital
- The shift pattern is 12-hour days and nights
- One full-time (37hrs) and one part-time (23.1hrs) available
- Please note the salary is Pro Rata for part-time hours
Key responsibilities:
- The postholder will support the Senior Charge Midwife and Midwives within the departments in the delivery of safe and effective standards of care
- The postholder’s main duties will include maintaining HEI infection control standards in accordance with policy through cleaning and maintaining a safe clinical environment, supporting women and their families throughout their pregnancy and birth experience.
- There is an expectation that the post holder will also rotate to areas within the rest of Maternity if the clinical need arises. This will involve working throughout all departments within the Queen Elisabeth University Hospital Maternity including Triage, Daycare, Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit, Labour Ward and Maternity Theatres, antenatal and postnatal wards
- The successful candidate will demonstrate care and compassion to patients, carers and relatives to help ensure high-quality person-centred patient care is delivered at all times.
- To carry out a range of assigned patient care tasks as directed by a Registered Nurse/Midwife to ensure delivery of a high quality of patient care
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- Previous experience working in an NHS setting is essential, and previous maternity experience is desirable
- SVQ 3 qualification or equivalent knowledge gained in a relevant area through experience, on-the-job training and short courses
- Understands and complies with HCSW mandatory induction standards and code of conduct
- Completion and maintenance of statutory & mandatory learning activities
- Awareness, understanding and compliance of policies and practices e.g. Escort Policy, Prevention and control of infection and Health and Safety. This post holder is therefore able to work within the scope of their practice under direct and indirect supervision by the registered nurse (training will be provided)
- Can demonstrate knowledge of equipment used within the department to support the registered nurse and ensure that they are compatible and in good working order
- Will escalate any concerns to a registered nurse

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
