The world renowned Canniesburn Burns and Plastic Surgery Unit specializes in microsurgical reconstruction of the breast, orthoplastic limb reconstruction, sarcoma and head and neck cancer, performing between 250-300 free flaps per year. The unit also manages a large number of general plastic surgery cases such as elective and traumatic hand surgery, melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer, perineal reconstruction, vascular anomalies, Laser, facial palsy, elective and acute paediatric surgery, cleft surgery and congenital hand surgery. The unit provides national services for brachial plexus and all major adult and paediatric burns across Scotland. The unit maintains close working relationships with multiple other specialties such as Orthopaedic Surgery, Breast Surgery, General Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Gynaecology, Dermatology, Rheumatology, Maxillofacial Surgery and Neurosurgery.
Position Summary:
This post is designed for candidates seeking training and experience in plastic and burns surgery in a major Regional Plastic Surgery Unit who are looking to improve their portfolio and logbook with a view to applying for Core Surgical Training or to ST3 Subspecialty Training in Plastic Surgery and Allied Specialties. MRCS exam or equivalent is desirable but not an essential requirement. The fellowship will retain an element of flexibility to fulfil the learning objectives of each candidate.
Duties of Post:
Successful candidates will be joining the Junior Tier Rota, both in and out of hours. The on-call commitment currently stands at 1:11, split between blocks of daytime and nighttime cover. The candidates will be expected to contribute to ward work as well as involving in theatre and outpatient clinic sessions. Delivery of the highest possible standard of care to patients is the ultimate priority. Fellows will be responsible for the day-to-day care of inpatients and will report to the responsible consultants. Mechanisms are in place to match experience and educational requirements to training provision. The majority of clinical work is delivered at the GRI site, with the opportunity of further paediatric plastic surgery exposure in RHC. Fellows will work under the supervision of senior residents and consultants and will have access to dedicated theatre and clinic sessions.
Principal Relationships:
The successful candidate will maintain close working relationships with consultants, other fellows, specialty trainees, nursing staff, allied healthcare professionals and technical staff.
Term of Post:
This is intended to be a one year term (August – August), but there may be flexibility in the start date, end date or duration of the fellowship.
