Health Care Support Worker - Specialist Mental Health Services

The Role
A vacancy for a band 3 HCSW has arisen within the Unscheduled Care Service. Applicants will be able to evidence excellent organisational skills along with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively both in verbal and written forms. As part the Unscheduled Care Team, the post holder will work closely with all disciplines/agencies, including emergency services who make referrals to the service. Primarily being the first point of contact for both referrers and those referred. This post is an integral part of the unscheduled care service which supports the functioning of the GG&C OOHs CPN Service and the Mental Health Assessment Units (MHAU’S) over a 24hr period in line with the 5yr MH strategy. The post holder will be based within one MHAU and will require to cross cover the other to ensure minimum staffing levels are achieved.
The post holder will support RMN’s who provide a specialist mental health assessment for individuals with complex mental health, physical and social care needs who present in crisis. The successful applicant will be required to accompany trained staff to provide an assessment within the patient’s home, MHAU’s and Emergency Departments. A current driving licence would be desirable in order to undertake these duties. Familiarity with digital systems including EMIS is necessary. Creating digital notes and inputting data are integral parts of the role. The post holder will also require to welcome individuals to the units, ascertain demographic information whilst having the ability to ensure their needs are met whilst taking cognisance of and ensuring risk assessments and controls are adhered to.

- Permanent Contract
- Full-time Position (36 HOURS PER WEEK)
- Shift pattern for this post is 24 hr rotational
Key Responsibilities
- Functioning as support worker within a multi-disciplinary team, to a defined patient group
- Contributing to the nursing assessment by implementing and reporting on aspects of the prescribed planof care to the named nurse/ nurse in charge.
- Contributing to risk assessment and risk management planning by indentifying and reporting issues of concern to the named nurse/ nurse in charge and supporting multi-disciplinary team compliance with NHSGGC policy and procedures
- Carrying out all relevant forms of nursing care pertinent to the individual needs of people within the defined patient group
- Identifying and responding to the health promotion needs of patients focusing on improving the mental well-being of patients
- Identifying and responding to the health promotion needs of patients focusing on improving the physical health of patients
- Identifying and responding to the needs of patients which might be related to vulnerability, gender health, domestic abuse, child protection and/or self harm
- Strive to ensure effective team communication, contributing to clinical audit, evidence-based practice, a culture of learning and innovation, participating in research activity and strategies to maintain safety and minimise the risk of untoward clinical incidents.
- Maintaining a safe clinical environment, prevention and control of infection by ensuring compliance with policies, standards and procedures
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
The post advertised is a unique role working within a community resource which is hospital based but does not form part of inpatient services. The mental health Assessment Unit accepts referrals from Emergency Departments, First Responders from the Scottish Ambulance Service, Police Scotland, NHS24 and from GP’s requesting a same day emergency mental health assessment. As part of their duties the successful post holder will welcome patients into the building, taking initial demographic information and have the ability to communicate effectively in a calm and inviting manner whilst maintaining a professional stance with highly distressed and or acutely unwell individuals.
The post holder will ordinarily be the first point of contact with referrers by telephone and liaison with professionals from other services. Excellent communication skills using the telephone to receive and offer accurate information is essential
Knowledge and familiarity of Microsoft digital systems and EMIS would be advantageous. Ability to navigate different systems, including EMIS will be an integral part of the role. Awareness and adherence to confidentiality, equality and diversity will be essential. The service is based within 2 units. These located within Leverndale and Stobhill hospitals. Outreach visits to Emergency Departments and home visits to assist trained staff when they are carrying out these assessments and transfer of informal patients being admitted will form part of the role. Although the successful candidate will be based within one unit, cross cover is necessary at times. Therefore a full driving licence would be helpful in their ability to complete all functions of the role.
