An opportunity has arisen for a Healthcare Science Associate Practitioner to join Laboratory Genetics, which forms part of the West of Scotland Centre for Genomic Medicine. The laboratory provides a high quality cytogenetic and molecular diagnostic service to the West of Scotland, population >2.7 million, and to the whole of Scotland through the Scottish Strategic Network for Genomic Medicine. The laboratory is based in the state of the art Laboratory Medicine building at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. You will join our team of >115 scientific and technical staff, and work as part of a team to provide technical support to the scientific staff of the Laboratory Genetics department. You will be responsible for day-to-day processing of patient samples, the maintenance of all associated electronic records, and will carry out housekeeping duties. You will perform laboratory tasks for a set of non-routine laboratory procedures, to ensure that the laboratory’s genetic tests are processed, and results are reported within contracted times.
The core hours of the laboratory are 9.00am to 5.00pm. This post is for 36 hours per week in line with the latest AfC terms and conditions, within the core working hours of the laboratory.
Please note that Laboratory Genetics is not an IBMS Approved Training Laboratory.
KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB
• Higher education to at least HNC, HND, NVQ3 or equivalent, in an appropriate scientific discipline.
• Previous relevant laboratory experience.
• Capable of prolonged concentration and attention to detail.
• Ability to handle hazardous chemicals and biological specimens safely.
• Ability to work as an effective team member in the delivery of a diagnostic service.
• Careful and meticulous, adhering to good laboratory practice.
• Enthusiastic and motivated.
• Attend seminars and meetings, and participate in continuous professional development.
• Computer literate.
