Veterinary Surgeon – Small Animal Surgery
Location: Scotland
Salary: Up to £58,000K per annum, plus clinical and out-of-hours supplements and employer pension contribution
Hours: Full-time (part-time considered)
GVC is assisting an academic site with a thriving clinical environment in recruiting a motivated and dynamic Small Animal Surgery Clinician . This is a fantastic opportunity for a surgical veterinarian to work in a state-of-the-art hospital that combines clinical service, teaching, and research.
About the Role:
The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team in a busy small animal hospital offering a range of services including surgery, orthopaedics, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, diagnostic imaging, anaesthesia, and ophthalmology. The hospital is equipped with advanced facilities such as CT, MRI, digital radiography, linear accelerator, and multiple fully equipped surgical theatres.
You will provide high-quality surgical care, contribute to the hospital’s referral service, and support both undergraduate and postgraduate clinical training. There is also the opportunity to engage in clinical research and scholarship, with protected off-clinic time to facilitate academic contributions.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical:
- Deliver expert surgical care to small animal patients, including advice and referral support for external practices.
- Participate in the development and implementation of innovative surgical techniques and clinical quality measures.
- Contribute to out-of-hours clinical cover for inpatients and emergencies.
- Supervise clinical scholars, supporting training and exam preparation.
- Participate in promotional and professional activities relating to the surgical service.
Teaching:
- Engage in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, assessment, and supervision.
- Develop innovative approaches to clinical teaching in line with quality enhancement strategies.
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to learners to support skill development.
Research & Scholarship:
- Collaborate on clinical research projects and evidence-based medicine initiatives.
- Contribute to publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals and present findings at conferences.
Administration:
- Support hospital promotional activities and contribute to divisional administration as required.
- Assist with performance and development review processes for staff within the service.
Essential Qualifications & Skills:
- Veterinary degree registerable with RCVS.
- Postgraduate residency or equivalent training in small animal surgery.
- For Grade 8: ECVS Diploma or RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (surgery – orthopaedics or soft tissue).
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and independent working skills.
- Ability to provide specialist-level surgical care in a busy hospital environment.
Desirable:
- PhD or equivalent research experience.
- Teaching qualification or experience in undergraduate education.
- Evidence of clinical publications.
