Lecturer in Nuclear Infrastructure (802675)

University of Strathclyde
Glasgow

Salary Range : £47389 - £58225
Contract Type: Open Contract
FTE:
35 hours/week
Closing Date:
01/05/2026

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), University of Strathclyde, is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Nuclear Infrastructure to support our research under the Advanced Nuclear Research Centre. Nuclear energy is central to the UK’s national security commitments and its strategy for achieving net zero carbon by 2050. The UK is investing in new build nuclear energy projects, expanding its defence programmes and increasing fuel manufacturing. In addition, we have a fleet of complex legacy nuclear sites that require decommissioning. To achieve these goals, will require innovation and teamwork.

The envisioned role of Lecturer in Nuclear Infrastructure aligns with the objectives and expertise housed within Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the University’s Advanced Nuclear Research Centre (ANRC). The ANRC’s mission is “to improve the operations, and extend the life, of new and existing nuclear installations by applying research and expertise to address life cycle costs and support nuclear power as a key element of net-zero”. The Lecturer will join an established interdisciplinary research team within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering researching novel technologies for Clean Energy Infrastructure. The Department are one of 6 University partners in the Nuclear Engineering Centre for Doctoral Training, SATURN, which provides funding for >30 PhD students (2024-2030) supporting a critical mass of early career researchers in nuclear engineering.

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in civil engineering or related fields. We are looking for a candidate who enjoys multidisciplinary research projects in clean energy technologies, with an emphasis on the nuclear sector. The candidate will demonstrate research related to, or directly applicable to, nuclear infrastructure which may encompass sensors, robotics, material science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and other emerging technologies. The candidate should have an ability and enthusiasm to collaborate with experts in related fields and an ambition to progress their ideas from fundamental research through to industrial application.

The candidate will possess a passion for teaching and an ability to deliver high-quality education at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in civil engineering. They will contribute to curriculum development and delivery, including lectures, tutorials and laboratories.

Given the international focus of our department and the emphasis on global engagement, the candidate should express a willingness and enthusiasm for teaching in our international programs. This includes contributing to established activities such as the IJEP program with Yunnan University, China, and the Strathclyde in Bahrain campus, potentially developing new modules that align with global educational needs.

A crucial aspect of the role involves securing research funding to support innovative projects, including applying to the UK research councils and for industry-specific grants. Once in post, training and mentoring will be provided by the Department and the wider University, to support the development of successful funding applications.

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde is one of the largest and most successful engineering faculties in the UK, and the largest in Scotland. As a leading international technological university, Strathclyde is recognised for its world class research, knowledge exchange and educational programs. At the heart of this is the Faculty of Engineering which boasts a growing research portfolio of over £85 million. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) is one of the largest and most successful civil engineering departments in Scotland with over 600 students, including 450 undergraduates, 100 taught postgraduates and around 100 research students. We have a strong commitment to widening access and inclusion while maintaining academic quality and an outstanding student experience.

Formal interviews for this post will be held on Thursday, 21 May 2026.

Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Prof. Rebecca Lunn, ([email protected]).
