About the Role:

Then working as a Surveyor (Naval Newbuilding) for Lloyd’s Register is something for you!

As part of your role, you will be part of a team of professionals dedicated to a long term and high-profile New Construction project with proven export opportunities. You will work with the Shipyard to deliver a series of Type 26 and 31 Frigates for the Royal Navy. The project is ongoing, and the opportunity exists to join where you can make your mark on the project.

The Role

  • Apply the knowledge of Mechanical engineering to identify problems and give guidance on Marine New Construction and Commissioning topics.
  • Understand the naval design process and collaborate with the team to support the build process
  • Utilise previous experience and operate as an expert advising on challenges and improvement opportunities in processes and methodology.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts, identify issues and research on possible alternatives and disseminate this knowledge to the wider team.
  • Depending on skill level, lead on all activities within you discipline for the build, ensuring construction adheres to the LR Naval Ship Rules, the ANEP77 Naval Ship Code as well as other contractual requirements.
  • Drive and implement a safety strategy and carry out patrol and audit activities.
  • Support the Project Manager in raising possible risks and advising on key technical challenges.
  • Build good working relationships internally and externally with key contacts and suppliers.
  • Operate as a strategic and lateral thinker with ability to translate a wider strategy into clear goals, priorities, and expectations for the project team.
  • Act as an all-round communicator engaging with stakeholders and encouraging positive, open and two-way discussion, fully involving others in decisions and ideas.
  • Work in accordance with professional codes of conduct and the LR Code of Ethics in IMS01.

About you:

  • Able to self-manage and prioritize tasks towards achieving goals.
  • Has market understanding and knowledge in marine & offshore supply chain and has ability to contribute in order to contribute to technical discussions with clients and LR stakeholders.
  • Has knowledge and ability to assess complex and sometimes ambiguous issues, identify and implement suitable solutions.
  • Communicates in a structured way and has ability to present technical ideas in simple way
  • Has ability to communicate effectively with persuasion across levels both internally and externally.
  • Enjoys building relationships and has ability to pro-actively develop a network of key relationships internally and externally.
  • Has perseverance in the face of obstacles
  • Has a drive for results, solution focused thinking and is keen to take accountability and ownership for delivering customer needs.
  • Demonstrates initiative and proactiveness and has flexibility adjusting your approach when necessary.
  • Has good planning and process management skills (scopes the length and difficulty of tasks; sets objectives and goals; breaks down work into process steps)
  • Has perseverance in the face of obstacles
  • Displays a team spirit, particularly in a multicultural environment and ability to work both independently and as part of a team with colleagues in person and around the world.
  • Excellent professional people skills to lead, motivate, coach team members to improve team and organizational performance across the area of business.

What you bring

  • A degree or equivalent from a tertiary organisation recognised by Lloyd’s Register within the relevant field of marine engineering or naval architecture, or
  • relevant qualifications from a marine or nautical institution and relevant sea-going experience as a certified ship officer
  • Security clearance is mandatory.
  • Ability to use a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology.
  • Ability to apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate and maintain engineering products, processes, systems, and services.
  • Ability to act both independently and as part of a team setting priorities and making decisions, taking account of commercial considerations, and navigating through a range of issues to define a clear way forward.

Preferred but not required:

  • Previous relevant Marine New Construction and Commissioning experience and exposure to working with Shipyard’s and the Supply Chain.
  • Experience with Lloyd’s Register Classification Society Rules and Regulations
  • Previous onboard experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience in the defence sector would be considered an advantage.
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
  • Working towards or achieving charted or incorporated engineering status.
  • Recent graduates would be considered for more entry level Positions on the project.
