Construction Manager / Senior Construction Manager

Rail & Civil Engineering - Enhancement Portfolio Delivery

Office base: Cumbernauld

Location of works: Edinburgh to Fife Corridor, Scotland

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Construction Manager or Senior Construction Manager to join our rail delivery team in Scotland, overseeing a portfolio of major rail enhancement projects across the Fife & H2D Enhancements programme, with progression onto a wider Fleet Infrastructure Enhancements portfolio.

This role is suited to our regional project portfolio providing a construction focused lead, to manage overall collective site delivery, ensure compliance and standards across multiple work sites, and provide experienced support to Senior Agents, site teams and the Contracts Manager, particularly on complex structures replacement works.

The Role

As Construction Manager / Senior Construction Manager, you will be accountable for the effective control and management of all on-site works across the portfolio, acting as the primary point of contact for delivery, safety, quality and coordination.

Unlike a single-project role, this position focuses on portfolio-wide construction leadership, ensuring consistency, efficiency and compliance across multiple concurrent sites. You will provide hands-on leadership, oversight and assurance, while supporting site delivery teams with technical, logistical and operational challenges.

Key Responsibilities

Portfolio & Delivery Leadership
  • Oversee the full delivery of the Fife & H2D Enhancements portfolio, transitioning into Fleet Infrastructure Enhancements works
  • Provide collective construction management across multiple live sites
  • Support Senior Agents and Site Agents to ensure programme, quality and safety targets are met
  • Work closely with the Contracts Manager to ensure works align with overall delivery strategy
Site Management & Compliance
  • Maintain full accountability for Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality compliance across all sites
  • Ensure all works are delivered safely, on programme, within budget and to specification
  • Proactively identify and mitigate delivery risks, construction constraints and interface issues
  • Manage coordination between multiple contractors, subcontractors and client-appointed parties
Technical & Complex Works Support
  • Provide construction leadership on complex structure replacements and technically challenging works
  • Ensure teams are resourced suitably and have the capability to safely deliver specialist activities
  • Support technical reviews, construction methodologies and sequencing of works
Planning, Assurance & Reporting
  • Oversee construction planning including weekly plans, possession strategies and site logistics
  • Ensure Construction Phase Plans, WPPs, Task Briefs and ITPs are produced and implemented to the required standard
  • Monitor delivery performance and contribute to programme and cost control discussions
  • Provide clear, timely reporting on progress, risk, SHEQ performance and delivery status
People & Stakeholder Management
  • Lead and influence construction teams across the portfolio
  • Support development and performance management of Supervisors, Agents and site leadership staff
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with the client, supply chain and internal stakeholders
About You

You will be an experienced Construction Manager or Senior Construction Manager with a strong background in rail civil engineering and enhancement works, confident managing multiple sites and teams simultaneously.

Essential Experience
  • Proven experience in a Construction Manager or Senior Construction Manager role within rail
  • Experience overseeing multiple projects or portfolios rather than single-site delivery
  • Strong understanding of rail civil engineering works, including structures and enhancement schemes
  • Demonstrable leadership across safety, quality, programme and cost control
  • Experience supporting delivery teams on technically complex works
Qualifications & Certifications
  • Degree / HNC / HND in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience
  • SMSTS
  • PTS
  • CRE and/or Responsible Manager (RM) experience or working towards - desirable
What's on Offer
  • Competitive salary dependent on experience
  • Company car or car allowance
  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays (increasing with service)
  • Company pension and life assurance
  • Health & wellbeing support
  • Long-term, secured workload on major Scottish rail enhancement programmes
  • Opportunity to play a key leadership role across a high-profile portfolio of works
Why This Role?

This is a strategic construction leadership role, not a single-project position. You'll have the chance to shape delivery consistency, mentor teams, and directly influence how complex rail enhancement and fleet infrastructure projects are delivered across Edinburgh, Fife and beyond.
