Chair of the Scottish Antimicrobial Prescribing Group (SAPG) (Ref: 245537)
Senior Medical Professional/Infection Specialist
Secondment until 30 June 2029
8 Hours/2 Sessions per Week (0.2 WTE)
Commensurate with existing salary

SAPG is a national clinical multi-disciplinary forum which co-ordinates and delivers a national framework for antimicrobial stewardship for NHSScotland. This comprises information (surveillance data on antimicrobial use and resistance), quality improvement interventions to optimise prescribing, and education for health and care staff, patients and the public. SAPG is part of the Evidence and Digital Directorate of Healthcare Improvement Scotland.
We are seeking an outstanding senior medical practitioner with an Infection Specialist background to provide leadership for SAPG to influence the use of antimicrobials across NHSScotland. The role includes:
- Chairing SAPG meetings held every 2 months and national networking and collaborative events (approximately twice per year)
- Supporting delivery of the SAPG strategy and SAPG work programme as part of the SAPG Project Board
- Supporting delivery of the UK 5-year action plan for antimicrobial resistance 2024 to 2029 ,(UK AMR NAP) including working towards achieving the UK AMR NAP targets and Scottish National antibiotic indicators
- Lead role in interactions with stakeholders in Scotland including national clinical and management groups and NHS board Antimicrobial Management Teams
- Major contribution to national policy on the use of antimicrobials through membership of the Scottish One Health AMR Strategic Oversight Group (SOHASO)
- Representing Healthcare Improvement Scotland as Chair of SAPG at national and international groups.
Candidates should have:
- Professional credibility within and beyond their professional field
- A track record in leading antimicrobial stewardship programmes
- Direct experience of SAPG as a member of SAPG and its associated project reference groups
- Ability to effectively chair complex multidisciplinary groups
- Proven ability to lead, influence and motivate
- Ability to communicate complex issues to differing audiences
The Chair must be a practicing and registered medical practioner, subject to appraisal and revalidation with the General Medical Council and hold a substantive NHS post.
The Chair is responsible to the Director of Evidence. Secondees also have professional accountability to the Medical Director within HIS.
