CVS Caseworker (Community & Voluntary Sector Members)

Unison
Glasgow

About this Role

UNISON is Britain’s largest trade union, with over 1.3 million members working in the public services, private, voluntary and community sectors and in the water and energy sectors. NHS Glasgow Clyde & CVS Branch is UNISON’s largest, with over 17,000 members across the Greater Glasgow Health Board, the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, and a wide range of employers in social care, the voluntary sector and private sector employers covered by this union. ‘CVS’ is UNISON’s term for the part of the membership outside large public sector employers, and the CVS Caseworker is the key representative for this membership in the branch.

Due to the planned retirement of our long-serving CVS caseworker, we are recruiting to this role with the aim of a thorough handover and opportunity to shadow the current post-holder. The successful candidate will be directly employed by the branch and will provide advice and representation to members employed in social care, the voluntary sector and private sector. These tend to be employers without union organisation or collective agreements, and a large of proportion of this membership is now migrant workers.

It is desirable but not essential that the Caseworker has access to a car that can be used for work purposes. Mileage, transport and subsistence costs will be reimbursed at standard UNISON rates. A mobile phone will be provided for work use. The CVS Caseworker will be located at the branch office on the fourth floor of Empire House, 131 West Nile St, Glasgow.

The Post

The Caseworker will undertake casework – advising and directly representing members in disciplinary and grievance processes, appeals, redundancy exercises, sickness absence processes, probation processes and all other first-line advice issues related to employment (e.g. health and safety queries, rota issues)

The Caseworker is line managed by the Branch Secretary for day to day personnel issues, and is supported by the Regional Organiser and their team on escalated cases (e.g. cases going to Thompsons Solicitors, cases going to professional registration bodies) and cases with wider organisational significance. The Regional Organiser also supports with advice and regular supervision of caseload. Within the branch, the Caseworker works closely with the Office Manager and office staff to ensure cases and queries are properly recorded, answered, escalated and stored.

The Caseworker will be required to keep accurate case files and ensure that the requirements of UNISON case management system are met. Training on UNISON’s Caseweb system and Merlin (Membership System) will be given to the successful candidate.

Essential Skills

Candidates must be able to demonstrate current experience of advice and representation with specific experience and working knowledge of employment law and Equality Act. You will need to be able to collate and prepare a case and be able to present in a credible, coherent and convincing fashion, whilst maintaining the high standing of UNISON.

Candidates must be competent IT users including email and standard Microsoft office packages.
