A leading UK engineering services provider is expanding its commercial team and now has an excellent opportunity for an experienced Mechanical Estimator. About the Role
As Mechanical Estimator, you’ll play a key part in producing accurate, competitive cost estimates for HVAC and mechanical services projects. Working closely with internal teams, suppliers, and subcontractors, you’ll support the full bid process and contribute directly to securing profitable new work.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Costing
- Prepare detailed cost estimates covering labour, materials, equipment, and subcontractor packages.
- Analyse drawings, specifications, and project documentation to produce comprehensive estimates.
- Identify key cost drivers including production times, materials, and labour.
- Carry out site visits to understand project scope and site conditions.
Tender Preparation
- Compile and submit tender documentation within client deadlines.
- Liaise with suppliers and subcontractors to gather and evaluate quotations.
- Assess proposals for compliance with project requirements and budgets.
- Prepare structured bid packages and maintain accuracy across all tender submissions.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of estimating processes.
Project Support
- Provide accurate cost information to project managers throughout the delivery phase.
- Assist in developing project budgets and financial reports.
- Monitor project costs and update estimates where changes arise.
- Take part in handover meetings to ensure seamless transition into delivery.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Build strong relationships with clients, suppliers, and subcontractors.
- Attend client meetings to clarify requirements and expectations.
- Offer technical and cost‑related support to both clients and internal teams.
Continuous Improvement
- Stay informed on industry developments, best practice, and new technologies.
- Identify areas for cost efficiencies and process enhancements.
- Maintain accurate cost databases and estimating libraries.
Candidate Profile
Education
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline.
- Industry memberships or professional certifications (e.g. CIBSE, HVCA) are advantageous.
Experience
- At least 5 years’ experience in mechanical estimating, with strong exposure to HVAC and mechanical services.
- Demonstrated success preparing accurate and competitive estimates across varied project sizes.
- Experience working on commercial, residential, and industrial projects is preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong analytical and numerical capability.
- Proficient in estimating software and digital tools.
- Confident communicator with solid negotiation skills.
- Able to interpret technical drawings and project specifications.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Comfortable working independently and collaboratively.
