Pre Construction Manager/ Senior Pre-construction Manager - Glasgow

Balfour Beatty
Glasgow
About the role

Power Transmission & Distribution is entering a major period of growth, with a strong pipeline of transmission infrastructure projects being developed through Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) and pre-construction phases.

We are looking for a Pre-Construction Manager or Senior Pre-Construction Manager to play a key role in developing major central build substation projects for SSEN Transmission . These are complex, high-value infrastructure schemes that will form a critical part of the UK's future electricity network.

This role sits at the front end of project delivery , shaping projects from early contractor involvement and design development through to mobilisation on site.

You will work closely with SSEN Transmission and multidisciplinary design teams to develop buildable, efficient solutions across HV plant, protection & control and civil infrastructure , ensuring projects are fully prepared for successful delivery.

Depending on experience, this position can be appointed at Pre-Construction Manager or Senior Pre-Construction Manager level .

Location: Flexible - projects are primarily located across Scotland
Working model: Hybrid (home, office and site)

What you'll be doing
  • Leading the pre-construction phase of major central build substation projects
  • Managing Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) and Stage One contracts through design development
  • Working closely with SSEN Transmission and key project stakeholders
  • Coordinating multidisciplinary design teams across HV plant, protection & control and civil engineering
  • Overseeing consultant outputs and ensuring effective design integration
  • Driving health & safety by design and early risk reduction
  • Ensuring projects progress successfully through the Balfour Beatty Gated Lifecycle governance process
  • Supporting project win strategies and transition from ECI to construction delivery
  • Championing digital engineering, including BIM and 3D design tools
  • Leading lessons learned and continuous improvement across projects
  • Mentoring and developing members of the pre-construction team
Who we're looking for

We're looking for an experienced infrastructure professional with a strong background in substation or power infrastructure projects , ideally within transmission frameworks such as SSEN, National Grid or similar.

You will typically have:
  • A strong technical background in civil or electrical engineering
  • Experience working on HV substation infrastructure or major power projects
  • A track record of leading design development or early project phases
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary teams in complex infrastructure environments
  • Strong stakeholder management skills when working with clients, consultants and delivery teams
  • Knowledge of CDM 2015 and health & safety by design principles
Experience in central build substation projects or large transmission infrastructure schemes would be highly advantageous.
