NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The role:

This is an exciting opportunity to lead the nursing workforce in Sexual Health Services in Sandyford Central – Tier 3 service of Sexual Health across all of NHSGGC.

Sandyford is the specialist service for sexual, reproductive and emotional health for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, hosted by Glasgow City Health Partnership’s NW Sector. Sandyford provides a range of drop-in and appointment services, clinical, information and counselling services at its city centre and community sites for approximately 110, 000 client visits per year.

Sandyford is a centre for excellence for undergraduate and postgraduate education and training for medical, nursing, counselling and information services. It is a developing UK-wide research centre and is part of an extensive range of national, international and local networks. It is the most developed integrated sexual and reproductive health service in Scotland and attracts national and international interest, especially for its integration of diversity and equality across all areas of planning and delivery. Sandyford works in partnership with a range of stakeholders and funders and with voluntary and specialist organisations. It hosts a number of unique services, including the West of Scotland Sexual Assault Referral Centre and the principal Gender identity service in Scotland for adults and the only one for young people.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

Clinical Service Responsibilities

  • Deliver sexual and reproductive health nursing services.

  • Coordinate Connect/Local service activities across the nursing team.

  • Oversee clinical governance, including infection control, health and safety, and reporting to Sandyford Governance and Operations Groups.

  • Produce service reports for senior management via the service manager and Professional Nurse Lead.

  • Work with team leads and consultant clinical leads to ensure adequate staffing, training and high‑quality service delivery.

Management and Professional Responsibilities

  • Provide professional leadership and operational line management for the nursing team, including recruitment, attendance management and application of HR policies.

  • Lead professional and practice development (with the Practice Development Nurse) to ensure clinically effective services aligned with Sandyford and NHS GGC strategies.

  • Maintain and improve service quality through monitoring, auditing and benchmarking.

  • Represent services at Sandyford management groups and other local/national forums.

  • Support the implementation of clinical governance and organisational development strategies.

  • Uphold NMC standards and maintain personal, professional and leadership development.

  • Lead clinical support and identify staff development needs through appraisal.

  • Promote, participate in and facilitate audit and research activities.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

  • Registered nurse in Adult or Mental Health, educated to Degree level, currently registered with the NMC.
  • Post-registration experience in a specialist sexual and reproductive health service, including the public health role of sexual health advising.
  • Nurse Independent Prescribing Qualification
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • IT skills, word processing/email/internet
  • Ability to work on own initiative and within a team
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal/written
  • Leadership and organisational skills
  • Mentorship and teaching skills
  • Assessors training

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
