The role:
The Royal Hospital for Children are delighted to advertise an exciting opportunity for Band 5 Theatre Practitioners. We are looking for well-motivated, hardworking Paediatric & Adult trained Nurses and ODP’s to join our dynamic theatre team. We are looking for a positive, hardworking, flexible & friendly team player, engaged for change and with a passion for high standards of care.
The successful candidate will be part of a large multidisciplinary specialty and will work together with the rest of the theatre department to promote team work and quality care.
The suite of 11 theatres encompasses a variety of specialties, inclusive of trauma, Cardiac Surgery, Neuro Surgery, Orthopaedics, General Surgery, Urology, Craniofacial, Cleft, Max Fax, Plastics, Ophthalmology, Dental, Gastroenterology, ENT, Respiratory, Medical, Haematology & services in outlying areas, including PICU, NICU, E.D, The Beatson, CT & MRI. We also have a Cath Lab & an IR suite. This variety will give you great learning potential with opportunities to rotate within the specialties.
Once you have completed an induction period you would be expected to cover a variety of shifts including early, late, weekends and on-calls. The posts are full-time and offer 37 hours per week.
We work on a rotational basis, mainly working 10 hour shift patterns.
You need to have a live NMC UK pin in order to be considered for this post.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
- Location based in Royal Hospital for Children
- Permanent and Fixed-term Contract (1 year)
- Full-time position (37 hours per week)
- Shift pattern for the post are varied
Key responsibilities:
To assess patient needs, plan/implement and evaluate a programme of person-centred care which is evidence based utilising all available resources taking into consideration the lifestyle, gender and cultural background and ensure involvement with the patient, family, carers and significant others.
Maintain patient records in line with NMC/HPC guidelines for records and record keeping.
Practice within the legal & Ethical framework as established by Nursing Midwifery Council (NMC) Health and Care Professions Council [HCPC] and National Legislation to ensure patient interests and well-being are met.
Work within the National Health Service (NHS), NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Legislation, Policy, Guidelines and Procedures.
Organise own time and that of junior staff and learners, providing an effective leadership role.
Ensures effective day-to-day management of other resources including stores supplies, pharmacy and maintenance of equipment.
Regularly lead a team of nurses and operating department practitioners and support the Multidisciplinary team
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
ESSENTIAL
- First Level Registered Nurse on NMC register (Paediatric & adult trained) (Part 1, 7 and 12)
- OR Registered Operating Department Practitioner on HPC register
- Ability to work shifts required to provide the service including night duty and public holidays.
- Ability to work on any site within GG&C when required.
DESIRABLE
- Recent experience within an operating theatre or immediate postoperative recovery room environment (HDU experience and experience during training may be relevant)
- Post registration qualification relevant to perioperative care

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
