Senior Civil Engineer

Black & Veatch Family of Companies
Glasgow

The Opportunity

At Black & Veatch we work on sustainable solutions to some of today’s biggest energy challenges. From small community improvements to grand-scale Mega Projects, you will be Building a World of Difference.

As a Senior Civil Engineer , you’ll join a dynamic and technically focused Civil Engineering team, taking a lead role in the engineering design of civil infrastructure for energy projects.

You’ll be key in the design and delivery of multiple Civil Engineering schemes throughout the EMEA region, supporting project delivery across multiple sectors including renewables (solar PV, BESS, hydrogen), data centres and advanced power generation (gas, waste-to-energy).

You’ll have the opportunity to:

• Take a lead role in site development activities and enabling works for energy sector projects within the UK and internationally.
• Drive multi disciplinary coordination across global teams, working closely with electrical, geotechnical, environmental, planning, and construction teams to deliver integrated site layouts and solutions.
• Guide technical discussions and make recommendations regarding site constructability and design
• Contribute to team development activities, including mentoring, performance feedback, training, and succession planning, supporting the growth and capability of less experienced engineers.

This role is based in our Glasgow city centre office 3 days per week, with the flexibility to work from home the rest of the week. For your first 3 months with us, you'll work from the office 5 days per week to help you get settled in.

Travel and on-site requirements

This is a primarily office-based role, however there will be occasions when you are required to travel to site and client offices.

  • For site development activities you'll need to visit site and lead site visits for short periods (typically one day), assessing the site in regard to constructability and design optimisation / optioneering.
  • Black & Veatch often act as owners engineer for construction projects, where the site works are undertaken by others. For these projects regular (monthly) visits will be required.
  • In addition to this, where Black & Veatch are also engaged as principal EPC contractor or involved in longer term construction projects, they will be opportunity to act as lead civil engineer onsite with opportunities for medium and longer term site secondments (depending on the business need). These opportunities would be with plenty of advance notice and eligible for additional compensation where appropriate. Such secondments and site visits are critical to the role and long-term development of the professional. Black & Veatch are keen to support the candidate with their long-term development in the field of Civil Engineering.

• Lead the design and approval of surface water and foul drainage systems for site development projects, including SuDS schemes, attenuation storage, flow control, pumped systems, and adoptable/non adoptable drainage networks in line with DCG, CIRIA C753, and local authority requirements.
• Undertake and oversee hydraulic analysis and drainage assessments, including greenfield runoff estimation, climate change allowances, exceedance flow routing, and Flood Risk Assessments, ensuring compliance with LLFA, EA/SEPA, and planning conditions.
• Prepare and review complex civil engineering deliverables for medium to large or multi disciplinary projects, including drawings, specifications, technical reports, method statements, and construction support documentation.
